Background of the Study
As academic institutions expand their network infrastructure, security becomes a primary concern. Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) have emerged as an effective technique for improving network security by segmenting network traffic and reducing the attack surface (Chukwu & Adewale, 2024). VLANs enhance security by isolating sensitive data from unauthorized access, thereby mitigating threats such as unauthorized data interception and malware propagation.
Federal University, Lafia, relies on a complex network infrastructure to support administrative, academic, and research activities. However, improper VLAN implementation can lead to security vulnerabilities, including VLAN hopping attacks, misconfigurations, and unauthorized access to restricted network segments (Usman & Bello, 2023). Optimizing VLAN configurations can significantly improve network security and performance.
This study aims to explore how VLAN optimization can enhance network security in Federal University, Lafia. It will analyze the university’s existing VLAN architecture, identify security gaps, and propose an optimized VLAN model for better security and efficiency.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the benefits of VLANs in improving network security, many institutions, including Federal University, Lafia, face challenges in optimizing VLAN configurations. Issues such as poor segmentation, lack of access control policies, and vulnerabilities to VLAN hopping attacks expose university networks to security threats. This study aims to analyze these challenges and recommend an optimized VLAN structure that enhances security.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the current VLAN implementation and security challenges at Federal University, Lafia.
To analyze the impact of VLAN optimization on network security.
To develop a framework for optimizing VLAN configurations to enhance security.
Research Questions
What are the security challenges associated with VLAN implementation in Federal University, Lafia?
How can VLAN optimization improve network security in the university?
What strategies can be implemented to enhance VLAN security and efficiency?
Significance of the Study
The study will provide IT administrators with insights on optimizing VLANs to strengthen network security. It will also contribute to improving the university’s network segmentation, reducing the risk of unauthorized access and cyber threats.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to VLAN security optimization in Federal University, Lafia, Nasarawa State. It does not cover other network security measures such as firewalls and endpoint protection.
Definitions of Terms
VLAN Hopping: A network attack where a malicious actor gains access to restricted VLANs.
Network Segmentation: The practice of dividing a network into smaller, isolated segments to improve security.
Access Control Lists (ACLs): Security rules that define who can access specific network resources.
